VW has analysed road casualty figures from the Department for Transport and found that more than 4,000 tailgating crashes occur every year, causing 6,000 injuries – 8% of these involved light commercial vehicles, equating to ten per week.
VW’s research also shows that 55% of all van-related tailgating incidents happen on A-roads.
The resulting downtime, it says, is costing fleets an average of £550 a day per van.
VW Commercial Vehicle is now offering adaptive cruise control (ACC) on all of its vans, costing from £280 plus VAT, to help drivers to keep a safe and constant distance from the traffic ahead.
ACC uses the radar-controlled Front Assist monitoring system alongside the City Emergency Braking system, both of which are standard on all Volkswagen vans.
