The market was fuelled by sales of rigid vehicles, with both the 6-16 tonnes and 16-tonnes and over segments notching up double-digit growth – up by 21.6% and 14.5% respectively.
Artic sales were up slightly in the final quarter of 2016 (0.7%), although they ended the year down by 7.5% overall.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, described the 2016 results for HGVs as “a positive sign”, particularly following “an exceptionally strong 2015”.
He adds: “HGVs are essential for transporting vital goods around the country and their demand provides a barometer for the UK economy, so these results are certainly welcome. Looking ahead, we must ensure business uncertainty is minimised so that this success continues.”
The top body type for 2016 was the tractor, followed by box van, tipper, curtainsider and RCV.
