VisionTrack joins other partners such as DAF, DHL and Ricardo in the project consortium, led by Transport Research Laboratory, which is carrying out the trial for DfT and Highways England.
A five-camera solution, using a connected digital video recorder, has been installed to provide full visibility of the tractors and trailers.
Front-, rear- and driver-facing cameras, along with side cameras, will capture video and supporting data on the vehicles and their interactions with other road users. The cameras will also be used, in combination with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), to assess the impact of platooning on the vehicle driver.
HelmUK began with off-road stages, including simulations, driver training and trials at Millbrook’s test track. No date has been confirmed yet for the on-road trials, but the project is due to complete in April 2020.
