The first tractor unit version of the new Volvo FMX in the UK, better known for its heavy-duty tipper configuration, has been delivered to timber haulier David Wood.
Owner David Wood makes the point that hauling timber out of the woods is notoriously tough on equipment, and hence his choice.
Configured as a 6x2 tag-axle, to keep the tare weight as low as possible, this FMX truck has Volvo's 13-litre 500hp diesel matched to an I-Shift fully-automated gearbox.
The tractor unit was specified with the Globetrotter cab and has a roof-mounted light bar and spotlights provide lighting for the forest tracks.
It is being operated with a three-axle Dennison skeletal logging semi-trailer, equipped with sliding bolsters and a front-mounted Epsilon log loader, with the FMX combination taking a net payload of 25-tonnes.
"I had seen the advertisements for six- and eight-wheel tippers, but had no idea they offered a tractor unit too," says Wood.
"All in all, it's coping very well. There's plenty of horses, the I-Shift is excellent and the traction is surprisingly good. I am very impressed so far," he adds.
The FMX truck was supplied by Volvo dealer Mansel Davies at Llanfyrnach, Pembrokeshire.
