Bus operators were invited to bid for the funding, which will see 93 vehicles being either retrofitted or replaced.
Arriva Yorkshire was awarded £252,000 to retrofit 14 buses; First York received £1.18m to retrofit 66 buses; Harrogate Coach Travel won £70,000 to retrofit five buses; Reliance Motor Services was awarded £72,000 to retrofit four buses and £54,000 towards the cost of three new Euro VI buses; and Transdev received £18,000 to retrofit one bus.
From 31 January, the only buses that will be exempt are those that enter the CAZ fewer than five times a day and those due to be retrofitted or replaced before 31 January 2021.
York is also due to introduce an electric park and ride scheme this year, with operator First York providing 21 new vehicles part-funded with a £2.2 million Low Emission Bus Fund grant from the government.
