New generation production technology buffs up retreads

Tyres & Retreads
Commercial vehicle retreads look set to reach even higher quality standards, following Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres' investment in £150,000 worth of twin-headed, automatic buffing machine for its retread tyre casings.
Vacu-Lug plant manager Brian Barron explains that the Danish-built SI0 machine is capable of working to a tolerance of one millimetre, and is already being used for the company's Duramold retreads. "Our casings typically require between two and three millimetres of rubber above the steel belt, and this machine can achieve that with pinpoint accuracy," he says. "In practice, this enables us to work to the most exacting quality standards, with a perfect result every time for any retread tyre, from 17.5in to the largest super-single."
