Natural gas trucks must be part of Industrial strategy 24 January 2017

Following yesterday’s (23 January 2017) publication of the government’s Industrial Strategy green paper, with £390 million pledged for future transport, the Natural Gas Vehicle Network (NGVN) is insisting that natural gas vehicles be included.

“A £390 million investment for future transport, including support for ultra-low emission vehicles, is welcome news, but it must include natural gas vehicles,” insists NGVN spokesperson Natalie Flay.

While accepting that decarbonising transport is complex and will take time, Flay asserts that for heavy vehicles and the road haulage sector, natural gas is the best choice.

“The technology is ready, the UK has an extensive and world class gas infrastructure and it is simply the most appropriate and affordable solution for this sector,” she says, pointing to the latest study by LowCVP (Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership).

NGVN will now be working with government to ensure ministers understand that decarbonising transport requires several approaches – not just electric cars, particularly given that battery charging currently relies on “power generated from a carbon-emitting grid”.
