Actros fuel performance is top of the table for Ronnie S Evans

Tractor Units
Family-run haulage business Ronnie S Evans says two Mercedes-Benz Actros 2545 StreamSpace tractors – its first new Mercedes trucks for more than a decade – are matching the best in the fleet for fuel efficiency.

Supplied by dealer Euro Commercials, the Llanelli-based firm’s new Actros are powered by 449bhp straight-six engines, driving through PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. Both pull new, lightweight, steel tipping trailers by Belgian manufacturer STAS.

So impressed is director Sion Evans that he has already order two more identical units from the dealer.

“Both of the new Actros are on regular work, and pulling recyclable materials,” says Evans. “One is returning between 8.2 and 8.5 mpg, while the other is at 6-6.3 mpg – the discrepancy between the two vehicles being entirely down to the routes they’re on.

“We’re happy with both sets of figures, which put them right up there with our most fuel-efficient vehicles, while the drivers certainly appreciate the comfort and quality of their cabs, too.”

As well as ordering two more of the Actros tractors, the firm has ordered another 16 STAS trailers. “They’re two tonnes lighter than a conventional steel trailer, so a lot more productive,” adds Evans.
