The City of London Corporation and Amey are reporting positive results from their trial of vehicle safety technology from Innovative Safety Systems (ISS), describing it as "markedly better" than other systems.

The Corporation and Amey have tested various types of equipment from ISS on vehicles that are performing waste collection and cleansing duties in the City.

These have included the RX2 and RX3 DVR hard disc recording camera systems and most recently Cyclear, a warning device to prevent accidents between HGVs and cyclists or pedestrians.

"The quality of the footage from the ISS DVR system is markedly better than others we have trialled and has helpful extra features, such as the mapping software that means we know the exact location of each vehicle," says Vince Dignam, business improvement and performance manager, City of London.

Cyclear comprises two elements, which can be installed on vehicles separately or in combination. For the cyclist, an illuminated sign and speaker alerts them that a vehicle is turning left; for the driver, an optional sequencing sensor warns that a cyclist is approaching.

"We have been trialling Cyclear on one of our Amey contract vehicles for a couple of months and the feedback from our crews has been really positive," adds Dignam.

"We are particularly impressed by the sensors, which don't false alarm and only alert the driver when a cyclist or pedestrian is travelling down the left hand side of the vehicle."

The City of London is a CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety) champion and is accredited as gold standard for FORS.
