Cubby Construction hooks up with Volvo for new FM drawbar

Rigids
Cumbria-based Cubby Construction has expanded its nine-strong HGV fleet with a new Volvo FM drawbar rigid.

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, of Carlisle, the standard height FM rigid has a Globetrotter Cab, 6,000mm wheelbase and all round air suspension.

The pair of 9-tonne front axles are complemented by a rear bogie design capacity of 19 tonnes, and the FM’s three steering axles deliver improved manoeuvrability. Volvo’s D13k engine is coupled to an I-Shift 12-speed automated manual transmission and the powertrain is rounded off by a standard single reduction drive axle with a ratio of 2.79:1.

Cubby Construction opted for a Palfinger PK 62002-EH lorry mounted crane, fitted in front of a Sterling cheese wedge plant body.

The tri-axle trailer was built by Wheelbase Engineering, with a fall arrest system for both load platforms.

One of the vehicle’s first tasks in the lead up to Christmas was a delivery of JCB equipment to the local Carlisle Youth Zone, of which Cubby Construction is patron.

The Volvo FM 460 drawbar rigid and two JCB machines formed a static display that children from the Carlisle Youth Zone could inspect, prior to an afternoon of model making and drawing the vehicles on show.

The vehicle is supplied with a three-year Volvo Gold R&M contract and is expected to be in service for ten years.
