Driver CPC needs clarity and checklist, says FTA

Driver CPC was top of the agenda at the Freight Transport Association's National Council meeting last week (3 July 2012), which concluded with the recommendation that the transport industry needs a checklist to establish what a good DCPC looks like.
The Council heard from Rosemary Thew, chief executive of the Driving Standards Agency, and, with the 2014 deadline approaching, identified a need for a clear and definitive description of what DCPC is. Council also suggested that trainers should be required to complete the DCPC themselves – and questioned whether a higher standard of Driver CPC training might be required, along with voluntary accreditation. "With the deadline in sight – two years to go for freight drivers and just 12 months for bus and coach drivers – we believe it is critical within that time that [DCPC] is organised and managed best," states James Hookham, FTA's managing director of policy and communications.
