Driver CPC was top of the agenda at the Freight Transport Association's National Council meeting last week (3 July 2012), which concluded with the recommendation that the transport industry needs a checklist to establish what a good DCPC looks like.
The Council heard from Rosemary Thew, chief executive of the Driving Standards Agency, and, with the 2014 deadline approaching, identified a need for a clear and definitive description of what DCPC is.
Council also suggested that trainers should be required to complete the DCPC themselves – and questioned whether a higher standard of Driver CPC training might be required, along with voluntary accreditation.
"With the deadline in sight – two years to go for freight drivers and just 12 months for bus and coach drivers – we believe it is critical within that time that [DCPC] is organised and managed best," states James Hookham, FTA's managing director of policy and communications.
