First low-entry Mercedes-Benz tractor debuts at CLOCS

Mercedes Benz showed its first low-entry 4x2 tractor unit at last week’s CLOCS conference and exhibition (14 March 2017, ExCel exhibition centre, Docklands), designed for operation in urban areas such as London.

An Econic cab design with panoramic front screen and bus-style fully-glazed near-side door was fitted with 354bhp, 1,400Nm torque Mercedes-Benz OM936LA engine and Allison six-speed fully automatic transmission. It also features pneumatic front suspension.

The two-axle Econic 1835L unit, intended to be rated at 36 tonne gcw, was shown with a tandem-axle curtainside trailer.

Although shown as a two-seater, up to four seats can be specified.

Apart from the low driving position, safety features include a factory-fitted cyclist blind spot camera system (feeds from multiple cameras are displayed on a dashboard monitor), a cyclist side scan system and the manufacturer’s ABAB advanced braking system.

At the exhibition, the vehicle was not yet road-legal, as it had not received its IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) from the DVLA.
