Scania launches new generation Citywide range

Scania has announced a new generation of its Citywide range for urban and suburban operations, promising lower fuel consumption, higher passenger capacity and improved experience for passengers and driver.

The updated range will include all fuel variants, with the battery-electric version the first to market.

The side-mounted engine placement of both the 7- and 9-litre engine and the electric motor, on 12m low-floor city buses gives three extra seats behind the rear axle. The increased front axle load can also give two extra seats, in total raising maximum passenger capacity to 100, depending on propulsion and layout.

When fitted with the 7-litre engine, the most common for urban operations, fuel consumption has been lowered by between 3% and 5%, says Scania.

With the introduction of a stop-start function, the total reduction in diesel and biodiesel operation will be 8% and 15% for gas-powered buses, adds the manufacturer.

Inside, the new Citywide has been restyled with new lighting to roof and side panels, larger side windows and a higher ceiling for a more spacious feel.

Drivers benefit from improved ergonomics, too, with more leg space, driver height settings and better visibility. Most of the instrument panel buttons are CAN-based so can be customised for local applications.

Anna Carmo e Silva, Scania’s head of buses and coaches, says: “Our guiding light has been to design a bus for more space, light and cleanliness. To reverse global warming, it is crucial that buses offer all the comforts needed to convince more people to switch to public transport.”
