Scania yesterday (23 August 2016) launched its next generation premium truck range at a major event in Paris with a live global webcast – stating that it represents 10 years of development work by 4,000 employees, and investments surpassing SEK 20 billion (£1.8 billion).

Highlights of the new S (the largest) and R ranges include: a claimed 5% improvement in fuel consumption, due to improved powertrains and aerodynamics; more performance ranges from 410—730bhp (13- and 15.6 litre), thanks to its modular architecture; digital connectivity; and a spread of hardware, software and services packages aimed at optimising productivity and sustainability.

“This is undoubtedly the biggest investment in Scania’s 125-year history,” stated Scania president and CEO Henrik Henriksson.

“Today we are not just launching a new truck range but also a unique, ingenious toolbox of sustainable solutions in the form of products and services,” he continued.

“We are focusing firmly on our main task: to give our customers the necessary tools for achieving profitability in the one business that really means something to them, namely their own.”

Manufacturing of the new trucks starts immediately at Scania in Södertälje, with first units off the production line designated for long-haul, although the company promises other options over time.

“The most noticeable features are of course the new cabs, but the real innovation is that we are now introducing new technologies, services and insights that will help our customers gain an overview of both their costs and their revenues,” insisted Henriksson.

“Our goal is for our customers to be able to achieve sustainable profitability, regardless of assignment type or the conditions in which they work… Our new range re-defines the term ‘premium’ within the truck industry.”
