Southampton City Council has dropped its plan to charge hauliers to enter a clean air zone (CAZ), with the decision welcomed by the Road Haulage Association as “a victory for common sense”.
The local authority was planning to introduce a CAZ where pre-Euro VI trucks would be charged £100 per day to enter.
The proposal has now been scrapped following a public consultation, and lobbying by the RHA and businesses.
“Southampton has made the right decision dropping a charging CAZ scheme that would have put businesses and livelihoods at risk,” says RHA chief executive Richard Burnett.
“This sends out a clear message to town halls across the country that CAZ schemes are a flawed concept – they’re shortsighted and anti-business. This is a victory for common sense.”
