Volvo trucks for regional and city distribution can all now be specified with automated transmission, following addition of the FE 4x2 distribution configuration with Volvo's software-driven I-Sync.
Volvo makes the point that, like the heavy trucks I-Shift box, I-Sync combines the manual box's operating reliability and low weight with an automatic's driving efficiency – but tailored for local distribution.
We first saw it on the Volvo FL in spring 2008, but this takes it up to some of the larger FE trucks, where I-Sync is combined with Volvo's 260 hp 7-litre engine – described as "an optimal combination for local distribution and shorter regional distribution duties".
Clara Werner Floberg, product manager for the FL and FE trucks, explains: "You get alert response from the engine, with smooth and convenient gear changing, even in frequent stop-start conditions such as close-quarter manoeuvring."
And he claims that I-Sync also contributes to fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.
