Health & Safety
I am honoured and excited to be in the driving seat as editor of Transport Engineer after taking over from John Challen, who I must first say a big thank you to for bringing me up to speed with everything. John will continue, I hope, to regularly contribute to Transport Engineer and carry on sharing his extensive knowledge of the industry.

During my journalism career to date, transport in its different forms has always played a role, as I have been the editor of a cargo, logistics and supply chain publication, while I have written extensively about airlines and airports. My most recent position was as editor of a publication that was focused on production engineering and manufacturing technology.

My first month at the helm has only further enhanced my enthusiasm and motivation for the role, due to the warm welcome that I have received from across the industry, notably at the SOE’s Safety and Resilience in Engineering Awards 2024 in October and, in November, at the biennial Euro Bus Expo.

During both events, I talked to many people from across the industry and their passion and commitment shone brightly in all of the conversations that I had. I am looking forward to learning much more about the industry and feel privileged to take on the position.

One thing is clear: I can see that these are very interesting times in the transport industry with electric buses, trucks and commercial vehicles in general, becoming increasingly commonplace on the roads, while the use of telematics and monitoring and tracking software is the norm.

In my inaugural issue as editor, we reveal the winners of the SOE’s Safety and Resilience Awards (see p25), which was a true celebration of excellence in engineering. It was also exciting to see the next generation of trucks that have been manufactured by DAF (see p10), as some of the technology and innovations that the manufacturer has developed are something to behold.

Please also check out the second ‘For the Sake of Safety’ SOE podcast (www.tinyurl.com/yc2s2mep), which explores safety assessment with Caroline Hamilton, a chartered mechanical engineer at the Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed).
