A fleet of 40 Volvo FM11 trucks have recently been delivered to UK multi-modal logistics outfit The Malcolm Group.
The order follows an extensive trial of a 450bhp FM11 Globetrotter 6x2 tractor unit, which returned in excess of 9mpg on the group's demanding test schedules on a variety of customer contracts.
"Currently the Volvo FM11 tractor units are fleet leaders on fuel economy and we have recently placed another multi-vehicle order for some of the last of these Euro-5 engine FM models," stated Group chief executive, Andrew Malcolm.
The trucks are similar in specification to the models trialled, with Globetrotter cabs and the 450bhp D11C six in-line, turbocharged diesel engine featuring, as well as Volvo's I-Shift automated gearbox.
I-Shift has also proved pivotal in The Malcolm's Group's Construction Services division, as an FMX tipper equipped with this transmission system has prompted a company policy change to standardising on automated gearboxes for this demanding on/off road sphere.
Operating on a wide number of double-shifted tramping runs between the Malcolm Group's extensive network of UK depots; the new FMs were supplied with factory-painted chassis, wheels and fuel tanks.
Regular hauling of 4.5m-high curtainside trailers meant the group were specified with additional Kuda roof-mounted air deflectors, which complement the FM aerodynamic cab design.
