RTITB launches counter-terrorism course for truck drivers

RTITB has launched a new course to provide truck drivers with a better understanding of the threat of terrorism and how they should react if an incident occurs.

Using case study examples and current statistics, one of the topics covered in the seven-hour course looks at weapons that a terrorist could use, including guns, bombs and the vehicle itself. “The use of vehicles as weapons is a relatively new strategy that professional LGV drivers must be made aware of and trained to avoid or manage,” says Laura Nelson, managing director of the training organisation.

Drivers will learn preventative techniques to minimise vehicle security risk, along with key signs of suspicious behaviour so the driver can confidently identify and report any such activity.

The course also looks at UK counter-terrorism legislation and how this might impact the professional driver’s role.

Nelson says the course will give drivers “a comprehensive understanding of how the current threat of terrorism affects them, the risks involved in being responsible for an LGV, and more importantly, they will be equipped to help prevent incidents”.

The standalone course can be added as part of the Master Driver CPC training suite, for £80 plus VAT.
