Whittaker builds first new-series Volvo FL horsebox

Rigids Bodies & Bodywork
Nottinghamshire-based Whittaker Coachbuilders has delivered what is believed to be the first new-series Volvo FL horsebox in the UK, to private buyer Darren Price.

The chassis was supplied by Crossroads Truck and Bus, of Rotherham.

The 16-tonne gvw FL 4x2 rigid is powered by the Volvo D8K 8-litre engine rated at 250bhp. It was also specified with the I-Sync automated gearbox.

Both axles of the 5900mm wheelbase truck are air suspended. The passenger door has a low-level window for improved visibility on the nearside and the bodywork has been designed so that the cab retains its tilt function for ease of maintenance.

On board, there is air-conditioned, secure accommodation for four horses and six people.

The bespoke bodywork is made from aluminium, with various types of insulation and lightweight body struts and mainframe. The interior of the cab has been customised with 'Vele' leather upholstery with red stitching and piping.
