Workshop Manager

Location: East / South East London

Salary: Competitive

Take the next step in your engineering management career with one of London's best known names in the bus industry.

The opportunity

Since our foundation over 20 years ago, Stagecoach London has grown into one of the capital's leading bus companies. By joining us, you can play a valued role in an engineering team that maintains a fleet of around 1,300 vehicles operating 50 million miles per year.

Our garages have long histories going back to the earliest days of public transport. You will be supporting the Engineer Manager at one of our garages in maintaining a state-of-the-art, modern fleet. There's real scope to step up in responsibility, in a business offering genuine opportunities for progression to its high performers.

The role

This is a key position as you will be overseeing the day-to-day running of the vehicle maintenance and repair function. We will task you with allocating vehicles into the workshop for routine servicing, deciding on daily priorities and giving instructions to engineering supervisors — providing advice and assistance on analysing diagnostic faults when your expertise is required.

Crucially, you will also lead on the motivation, performance measurement and discipline of the engineering staff. You can make a visible impact by getting the best from a team of foremen, including skilled and semi skilled fitters, coachmakers, electricians, clerks, stores personnel and contractors.

You will also deputise for the Engineering Manager as required and play an active role in managing the premises, plant and equipment for a 24 hours per day, seven days per week operation.

The requirements

It's important that you have a strong understanding of mechanical engineering and vehicle maintenance procedures, including knowledge of electrical engineering and bus bodywork construction.

You need to hold a minimum NVQ 3 or equivalent in Motor Vehicle repair, together with membership of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers.

Adept at planning and prioritising a work schedule, you will combine business acumen and commercial awareness with proven communication and leadership skills – and the ability to motivate, engage and develop a team.
